Last week marked an important milestone for the City of North Chicago with the groundbreaking of the Lewis Avenue Detention Basin and Drainage Improvement Project. Upon completion of Phases 1 and 2, the project will deliver critical stormwater improvements—protecting homes, enhancing system performance, and benefiting nearly 1,000 structures across the community. Phase 1 includes construction of a detention basin with a storage capacity of approximately 20.5 acre-feet of stormwater—roughly equivalent to more than 20 football fields covered by one foot of water. This basin will play a key role in reducing downstream flooding and represents just one component of several environmental enhancements. With support from Mayor Leon Rockingham Jr., Senator Adriane Johnson, Congressman Brad Schneider, Lake County Board Chair Sandy Hart, and other local leaders, projects like this are advancing and delivering measurable results.
