The City of North Chicago held a Kick-Off Ceremony for the Sheridan Crossing Remediation Project on September 5, 2025. It marks a significant step toward transforming a long-vacant, 40-acre property into a vibrant new development. A project that has been twenty years in the making. Trotter and Associates, Inc. helped the City secure $2 million in Rebuild Illinois funding from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to cover remediation costs. Lake County also secured a $4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to support the project. The Sheridan Crossing soil remediation involves treating contaminated soil on-site before its safe disposal. The process will be conducted under the oversight of the Environmental Protection Agency. Once the site is remediated, it will be transformed into a walkable downtown district featuring multi-use buildings with commercial space on the ground floor and residences above. This project is expected to spur economic development and enhance the quality of life in North Chicago. This project would never have gotten off the ground without the leadership and support of Mayor Leon Rockingham, Jr, city staff like Taylor Wegrzyn, AICP, and our partners at Lake County, Congressman Brad Schneider, Senator Adriane Johnson, Senator Julie Morrison, Representative Bob Morgan, County Board Chair Sandy Hart, County Vice Chair Mary Ross Cunningham, and many others who tirelessly work to ensure equitable growth and the long-term vitality of the City of North Chicago.
