The Lewis Avenue Detention Basin Phase I project is a stormwater infrastructure improvement for the City of North Chicago near Lewis Avenue and 20th Street. The project is intended to address chronic flooding within the Southwest Pettibone Creek Watershed by providing additional stormwater storage, reducing peak flows, and relieving pressure on the existing drainage system.

Phase I includes construction of a stormwater detention basin, related earthwork and grading, storm sewer improvements, erosion control, restoration, and site stabilization. The basin will temporarily store runoff during major rain events and release it in a controlled manner to help reduce downstream flooding impacts.

In addition to flood mitigation, the project includes wetland vegetation. Together with future phases, the improvements are expected to enhance public safety, protect nearby homes and properties, and improve the overall resilience of the local stormwater system. The project is expected to be funded through grant assistance from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. Phase I represents an important first step toward reducing flooding frequency and severity in the area. This phase will be completed this fall.
